New York Times names its 25 Best Restaurants in Austin right now

Regular readers of American-Statesman dining content will recognize all of the names. Tiki has been alive and well in Glendale since the 1930’s, at Damon’s Steak House. The prime rib is still the draw here, though the outrageously neon interior is its own reason to go. Or, rather, reverts back to the 1950’s, when Baked Alaska, pepper steaks and hand-spun salads hit each table, and the room looks like a plastic jungle of fake foliage.

“It is going to be a very significant issue, because the pier itself draws over one million people here and as a result, it brings us people into the downtown on a regular basis,” said Kim Heim with Main Street Oceanside. Standing at 1,954 feet in length, the wooden pier is the second longest of its kind in California and the longest in Southern California. On Friday, Parsons said that 90 percent of the pier appears to have been unimpacted due to the extensive firefighting efforts. Engineers have been brought in to identify what parts of the pier are salvageable or structurally sound.

The pizzeria is not only the most affordable, but also turns out pies that are worth every penny. The wood-fire-baked titular pizzas have earned rave reviews from too many major publications to count. Dining here feels like an event because of the restaurant’s fame, but in practice, it’s closer to a trip to the neighborhood pizza joint than you’d imagine. Considering the white napkins and seaside location, one would think this Malibu joint would require a second mortgage for a full night. Instead, high quality seafood dishes can be had here for fair prices, especially considering how much you might pay for the Pacific Ocean view alone (book a golden hour reservation to see Moonshadows in its full glory).

Those wanting to splurge can jump to the “chef’s stash” section of the offerings, but the Ora King Salmon and a glass of wine from the well-selected list will make you feel like the nearby Los Angeles River is actually the Rhône (just squint really, really hard). The all-day sibling to restaurant/art project Vespertine, this Culver City café showcases chef Jordan Kahn’s creativity at a much more digestible price point. It’s just interesting, satisfying food that earned Kahn a spot on 2017’s Food & Wine Best New Chefs list.

The Best Restaurants In Burbank

Expensive meals here look more like stunning beach vistas, experimental fusion dishes, and top-notch international cuisine hidden in strip malls and at walk-up counters. Great deals on great meals here can look like unexpected value in a seemingly expense-account-only eatery; or it can look like a daring prix fixe menu, a spectacular view, or even food so delicately made that you can’t believe it comes from a small dining counter. The space is essentially a series of massive interconnecting dining rooms, each filled with various fireplaces, wood-paneled walls, and of course, hundreds of framed acting headshots. As for food, don’t get too cute with your order—this is the kind of place where if your table isn’t filled up with caesar salads, massive plates of prime rib, and several orders of their famous garlic bread, you took a wrong turn somewhere.

The fire began around 3 p.m., with at least one boat on scene battling the blaze

Sanchez, who said the city would rebuild, stated at the news conference that all employees had been accounted for. “Chef Rachel saw smoke coming up from underneath the pier, behind the old Ruby’s building," Waite said. "Thankfully, everyone was evacuated safely. "This is really, really good news," Parsons said, "and like I said, we think we have forward progress stopped there. What that means is that the vast majority of the pier itself is in good, undamaged condition." Despite being warned away, hundreds of people assembled along the coast to watch the fire and efforts to put it out.

He also stated that the main body of the fire had essentially been knocked down and that they were now focusing on keeping it under control, though the deck was still burning, which is where firefighters were concentrating their efforts. Coast Guard cutter, but smoke continued to pour out all sides of the two-story building as well as beneath the pier, with only a few flames actually visible. Over at the coast, people had started to congregate to watch the conflagration, with some posing for selfies with the historic structure aflame behind them.

The structure was once the site of the Ruby's Diner, which has stood empty since the business closed three years ago. As SkyRanger 7 arrived overhead, smoke was blowing onshore the entire length of the structure. A massive plume of smoke quickly filled the sky, and two fire-fighting boats arrived on scene shooting water cannons at the structure at the end of the pier, where it broadens to support two structures and is called the hammerhead. A lone lifeguard vehicle posted up at the foot of pier, with a long fire hose, possibly two, running the length of the pier. The Times did not include any of the pizzerias from Austin's growing scene, such as Bufalina, Home Slice Pizza, Allday Pizza, Bambino. Speaking at a news conference at around 5 p.m., Oceanside fire chief David Parsons said lifeguards were the first to report the fire and firefighters arrived five minutes later.

Using handmade pastas from Pasadena’s Semolina elsewhere on the menu adds another home-cooked touch. “Beverly Hills.” “Steakhouse.” “Value.” Those usually aren’t words found in the same short story, much less sentence. And while Matu is more of a splurge than other entries on this list, a five-course meal for under $90 in this zip code is, by comparison, a steal.

That’s especially true when the main event is a 12-ounce Wagyu ribeye, grass-fed and raised in New Zealand. Though of late a mostly hipster hang in Los Feliz that garnered fame via the movie Swingers, The Dresden has for more than six decades been a steakhouse with a mean center-cut pork chop and one hefty peach melba. Part local haunt, part karaoke bar and all steak-y kitsch, Torrance’s The San Franciscan has been dishing shrimp cocktails and signature three quarter pound slices of prime rib since 1963. Commerce’s longtime corner spot known as Steven’s Steak House has been serving up thick plates of prime rib to late night diners for half a century, and still does brisk business with locals and the post-casino crowd. First opened in 1953, Taylor’s Steakhouse moved to their current location on 8th Street in 1970, then watched as the the neighborhood completely shifted through the decades. This longtime Koreatown staple still serves their ten-ounce sirloin culotte steaks, and sitting in the red naugahyde booths is as fun as ever.

Friday, the fire chief said they were stopping all operations to go into what is called a “tactical pause,” as to allow crews to assess the scene without any activity. This included use of drones to take a look at the fires’ impact in hard-to-reach spots under the deck. About 200 personnel — from fire crews to police — were on scene minutes later. Coast Guard ships, fought the fire from the ocean, while San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and San Diego Gas & Electric helicopters made overhead water drops. This popular Eagle Rock bistro is in a 1911 Craftsman home, giving dining here the air of a friend’s dinner party. Your friend’s cooking, however, has nothing on the Beast’s burger, a favorite both for locals and those who drive in for a romantic date-night experience.

Oceanside officials said they are in the process of proclaiming a local emergency to open up funding for the pier’s repair. The coastal city’s legislative delegation is also working on a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom and President Joe Biden to ask for emergency financial assistance. Crews remained on scene overnight to continue attacking any remaining flames and leftover smoldering. According to Parsons, there was a bit of fire activity, including some that was controlled to get access to hard-to-reach spots underneath the deck. The California and Mediterranean fusion at this Toluca Lake eatery extends beyond the menu, with its arched doorways, bright interiors, and sandy color scheme.

As of 10 p.m., crews were still battling active fire on the restaurant building and the pier and boats were still in the water, according to Blake Dorse, a division chief with the Oceanside Fire Department. However, officials believe the blaze will stay contained to the pier's end, in part because crews removed several planks of the pier and created a 5-foot trench going across the width of the pier to help stop the fire from spreading east. Although smoke obscured the scene, the building at the end of the pier was burning furiously.

Over a century of embracing the freedoms of expression and experimentation, LA has established itself as an unparalleled haven of creativity. To the Perkins Eastman Los Angeles studio, in addition to being home, LA offers the opportunity to do beautiful work and push the limits to what our projects can offer to meet that creative spirit. Los Angeles Unified School District serves almost all of the city of Los Angeles, as well as several surrounding communities, with a student population around 800,000.[303] After Proposition 13 was approved in 1978, urban school districts had considerable trouble with funding. LAUSD has become known for its underfunded, overcrowded and poorly maintained campuses, although its 162 Magnet schools help compete with local private schools.

Los Angeles,[a] often referred to by its initials L.A., is the most populous city in the U.S. state of California. With roughly 3.9 million residents within the city limits as of 2020[update],[7] Los Angeles is the second-most populous city in the United States, behind only New York City; it is also the commercial, financial and cultural center of Southern California. Los Angeles has an ethnically and culturally diverse population, and is the principal city of a metropolitan area of 13.2 million people. Greater Los Angeles, which includes the Los Angeles and Riverside–San Bernardino metropolitan areas, is a sprawling metropolis of over 18 million residents. How much time do you spend trying to figure out what type of stitch you need for your fabric or the time it takes to change threads and match color segments?

The major highways that connect LA to the rest of the nation include Interstate 5, which runs south through San Diego to Tijuana in Mexico and north through Sacramento, Portland, and Seattle to the Canada–US border; Interstate 10, the southernmost east–west, coast-to-coast Interstate Highway in the United States, going to Jacksonville, Florida; and U.S. Route 101, which heads to the California Central Coast, San Francisco, the Redwood Empire, and the Oregon and Washington coasts. There are numerous additional colleges and universities outside the city limits in the Greater Los Angeles area, including the Claremont Colleges consortium, which includes the most selective liberal arts colleges in the U.S., and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), one of the top STEM-focused research institutions in the world. The current charter was adopted on June 8, 1999, and has been amended many times.[248] The elected government consists of the Los Angeles City Council and the mayor of Los Angeles, which operate under a mayor–council government, as well as the city attorney (not to be confused with the district attorney, a county office) and controller. Immediately to the north lie the San Gabriel Mountains, which is a popular recreation area for Angelenos.

Use any of the included 120 regular fonts or 10 built-in fonts - or you can even create your own font. Now you can design and see exactly what you’ll get, set background colours to match your fabric, and select your own thread colour from any of the popular pallets included, or import a new one if you need. Save time changing threads stitching by designing using the Intelligent Colour Sort feature, and if you love colour blending with the gradation tool. Whether you are using a small single-needle machine or a large multi-needle, it will save you time and stress when you preselect and design to fit your frame and even split designs with ease.

Its high point is Mount San Antonio, locally known as Mount Baldy, which reaches 10,064 feet (3,068 m). Further afield, the highest point in southern California is San Gorgonio Mountain, 81 miles (130 km) east of downtown Los Angeles,[86] with a height of 11,503 feet (3,506 m). The highest point in the city proper is Mount Lukens at 5,074 ft (1,547 m),[84][85] located in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains at the north extent of the Crescenta Valley.

Of the five major film studios, only Paramount Pictures is within Los Angeles' city limits;[172] it is located in the so-called Thirty-Mile Zone of entertainment headquarters in Southern California. Non-Hispanic Whites were 28.7% of the population in 2010,[137] compared to 86.3% in 1940.[138] The majority of the Non-Hispanic White population is living in areas along the Pacific coast as well as in neighborhoods near and on the Santa Monica Mountains from the Pacific Palisades to Los Feliz. In early 1984, the city surpassed Chicago in population, thus becoming the second largest city in the United States. The area that became Los Angeles was originally inhabited by the indigenous Tongva people and later claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542.

The discovery of oil in the 1890s brought rapid growth to the city.[19] The city was further expanded with the completion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913, which delivers water from Eastern California. Reduce the amount of time spent changing threads by using the Intelligent Color Sort feature, which will stitch those areas that share one color in groups. However, the building has been vacant since February 2021, when the Ruby’s Diner location closed its doors after 25 years. Just hours after the fire began, Mayor Sanchez told FOX 5/KUSI that the city is committed to rebuilding the pier, adding that she has been in contact with Rep. Mike Levin (D-49), state Sen. Catherine Blakespear and San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. In the meantime, officials have issued a beach closure for a stretch of the Oceanside coast south of the pier from Surfrider in the north to Tyson Street in the south as a precaution due to falling debris that may have washed on shore. Oceanside firefighters and water boats were still continuing those efforts to contain the blaze by 10 a.m.

Last year, the city of Oceanside spent $5.5 million to upgrade aging pipes and electrical systems on the pier, which is 1,954 feet long. The wooden structure was first built in 1888 but has been destroyed twice in its lifetime, once in 1890 by rough seas and, after it was rebuilt, again in 1902. Parson said crews would remain on scene into the night, looking for "hidden fire" or hot spots, to prevent the blaze from rekindling. The restaurant at the end of the pier became a feature several years earlier, in the 1970s.

The firefighting boats and Coast Guard cutter remained on station, water cannons still blasting. This Highland Park restaurant is worlds away from formal “fine” dining, but there will be few at any price point that can match its Taiwanese street cuisine offerings. Individual dishes here rarely reach $10, meaning that a meal can be put together with tastes from across the menu without running up a big bill. “Street food,” by its nature, isn’t supposed to be fancy, but the care that goes into the thousand-layer pancakes and clamshell buns filled with pork belly can create tastes just as intricate — and often more interesting.

Spring Street Smokehouse

Flames ripped through a now-vacant restaurant building that formerly housed a Ruby’s Diner, sending a large plume of black smoke billowing overhead. It feels like the fanciest of the downtown Los Angeles rooftop restaurants, but the French cuisine here can be had for less than one might expect. Couple that with a view that stretches from the high-rises of South Park all the way to the ocean on a clear night, and it’s easy to see why it’s been a popular date spot for more than a decade. The bar area can be a scene, but grab a table upstairs for a more refined, sit-down experience. Chef Nancy Silverton has three restaurants under one roof at the intersection of Highland and Melrose Avenues (including Osteria Mozza and Chi Spacca).

North County Fire Protection District issued a fire advisory due to heavy smoke Thursday afternoon that could impact the Fallbrook and Bonsall communities to the northeast of the coastal city — conditions that were “much improved” by Friday morning. Residents as far east as Vista and as far south as Del Mar reported being able to see the smoke. Of course, the list expands beyond tacos to include the broader spectrum of Mexican food. Both Suerte and Este, from owner Sam Hellman-Mass and executive chef Fermín Núñez made the list, as did Iliana de la Vega's El Naranjo and Comadre Panaderia. It's always hard to parachute into a city and get a sense of what makes its dining scene special (I've done it myself all over the country, from Seattle to Charleston.) But the NYT reporters tasked with the Austin snapshot have a strong familiarity with the city. Brett Anderson, who lives in New Orleans, where he served as the Times-Picayune critic for about 20 years, visits Austin regularly, as does fellow Times dining reporter Priya Krishna, who is originally from Dallas but currently lives in Brooklyn.

Parsons added that they have not declared the fire under control yet, but are “almost there.” The fire chief said that he is optimistic all fire activity will subside by Saturday. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A fire broke out on the iconic Oceanside Pier Thursday afternoon, leading to a massive, hours-long firefight that stopped the flames from engulfing the entire structure. The full menu of 13 offerings is available at mulvacenter.org/savour-on-broadway. Possibly the most well-known name in all night steaks, Pacific Dining Car on 6th St. has been sizzling up steaks 24/7 since 1921. The interior still matches the name, too, complete with faux luggage racks and the wood-paneled feel of dining car days gone by. A legendary Hollywood Blvd. haunt, Musso & Frank Grill has been cutting steaks since 1919.

By 6 p.m., SkyRanger 7 showed a very different scene than when it arrived hours earlier. Smoke still blew at the scene, but was no longer billowing, with the plume was vastly diminished. Small flames could be scene burning here and there, but the fire, in the structure at least, seemed to be largely knocked down.

Annual favorites

It’s somewhere between high-end dining and a great value – worth saving up a bit of extra cash for, but reasonable compared to the celeb-friendly Malibu stalwarts just up the Pacific Coast Highway. Last year, the city poured around $5.5 million into upgrades for the pier, including new electrical systems and pipes. According to Sanchez, work was also being done to update the pier’s fire system — something the mayor said prevented this fire from damaging the entire structure. The Oceanside Pier was originally built in 1888, but has been rebuilt multiple times due to damage sustained in fires and storms. The current pier, which was erected in 1987 to the south of the original pier’s location, marked the sixth reincarnation of the structure, according to Kristi Hawthorne with the Oceanside Historical Society.

Sanchez added that there was renovation work being done inside the restaurant prior to the fire Thursday, but details about what was going to replace the Ruby’s once the work neared completion were not disclosed. An emergency Oceanside City Council meeting will be held on Wednesday to ratify the proclamation for a local emergency, per fire officials. “The question arose because you saw a lot hose laying out on the pier as well, the reason for that is that we wanted to have as much water on the large fire that you saw as possible, so the way that we do that is to put additional hose in place,” he said. On Friday evening, fire officials declared the fire under control, meaning that all forward progress on the fire has been stopped.

The decor hasn’t changed much since then, and the waiters still wear those bright red jackets, but for pure charm (and a great bar), it’s hard to beat. Fifteen minutes later, Oceanside mayor Esther Sanchez told NBC 7 in a phone interview that "what we know is that the fire teams decided to do a defense tactic and not try to save the restaurant but save the rest of the pier." Luckily for the crews working on the boats, the surf was only 2-3 feet, easing their efforts. According to Parsons, that determination is made based on water quality and the county will need to sample it before giving the all clear. Only one engine will remain on scene overnight under fire watch, Dorse added.

The pier and the Junior Seau Beach Recreation Center will similarly remain closed until further notice, city officials say. The small Harbor Pier that neighbors the structure, however, will remain open for fishing. Everything around the hammerhead area appeared to have sustained “significant damage” from the fire, the fire chief said. This includes the pier’s decking and substructure, the restaurant and a small kiosk that housed another eatery, called the Brine Box. Thursday at the end of the historic pier, a major tourist attraction in Southern California.

Carnival Ship to Begin Sailing From Norfolk Due to Baltimore Closure

spirit of baltimore cruise

No visit to Baltimore is complete without exploring the historic Inner Harbor. Step aboard a collection of impressive ships— a Pearl Harbor-era cutter, a 1930s lightship, a sail-powered warship dating back to 1797. Then stroll around brick walkways flanked by chic boutiques, restaurants serving Mid-Atlantic seafood, and photo-worthy views of the water. Further details about the shuttle buses and both embarkation and debarkation plans will be provided in the days to come as the cruise departure date draws closer. The ship is scheduled to remain sailing from Baltimore through April 2026, though it is possible that deployment may change if plans to reopen the port to cruise traffic take longer than expected. At this time, however, there is no indication that such a dramatic change may be necessary.

Spirit of Baltimore Lunch Cruise

All cruises begin boarding 1/2 hour prior to the departure time. Tickets may be picked up at the dockside kiosk up to one hour prior to the cruise. In the rare event of a schedule change, you will be contacted with updated information. The 88,500-gross-ton, Spirit-class Carnival Pride is also offering several Bermuda sailings planned from Baltimore, beginning with the August 11 departure and following with departures on September 1, September 22, October 6, and October 27. As the Port of Baltimore and Port of Norfolk are approximately 250 miles (400 kilometers) apart, roughly a 4-5 hour drive depending on traffic conditions, this can significantly impact passengers’ pre- and post-cruise travel plans. If you love memory maxing, you’ll love Vision of the Seas® — where you’ll always find plenty of incredible ways to fill your days at sea.

Carnival Pride‘s April 21 departure is her first roundtrip sailing from the region, following a one-way repositioning cruise from Tampa to Norfolk (Baltimore). Guests onboard that cruise are also being provided with details of their Norfolk debarkation. When the bridge collapsed on March 26, cruise lines immediately shifted operations to Norfolk as the nearest possible homeport that could handle the traffic as well as ensure itineraries were preserved as much as possible. Carnival Cruise Line is providing complimentary bus service between Baltimore and Norfolk, both for embarking as well as debarking guests. The service is limited, however, and travelers need to register to ensure their space on the shuttle. For guests on the April 21 departure, information about shuttle registration will be provided the week of April 15.
